About Yana
- What's your name?
- Hello, my real name is Yana but for social media and most online friends I go by GBfactor!
- How old are you?
- I think I can consider myself as a late teen, and currently I'm hoping to get in a university.
- What are your other hobbies?
- Drawing is my main hobby, but also I enjoy sewing patches of my favourite characters for shirts, making figures out of soft clay, doing various paper crafts, playing videogames, and watching object shows!
Discovering and Using Tux Paint
- How and when did you first learn about Tux Paint?
- Firstly I discovered Tux Paint in 3-4th grade through school PCs, which all had it installed. Our teachers let us draw there if we finished our work on other programs quickly (also I can't leave unmentioned the fact that everyone's favourite tool was flower, which made funny sounds and overall was awesome). Then when I got a bit older we were introduced to Scratch and I focused on it instead. Then, after many years I got back to Tux Paint (along with other childhood games) from nostalgia and started drawing there.
- How do you usually interact with Tux Paint?
- Mostly I draw there with a drawing tablet, but sometimes I use a mouse as well (mostly to choose a color in the color wheel because the stylus sometimes lags and gives absolutely random colours).
- What are your "go-to" tools in Tux Paint?
- My most used tools are half-translusent round brushes (and one 1 pixel translucent brush I did myself!), flip tool to check if the drawing is okay, moving and size tool to correct the sketches, and bloom tool to correct the lighting.
- Is there something you wish Tux Paint could do that it can't?
- I wish Tux Paint had some kind of rotating tool for canvas; the closest thing I found is perspective tool, but still it's kinda hard to use for rotating purposes.
- What other kinds of art tools do you use?
- Besides Tux Paint I use Magma and ibis paint if my computer is not available, but I rarely draw finished works because recently I find drawing on a phone uncomfortable.
- What tips or tricks would you like to share with other aspiring artists?
- As for the tricks for Tux Paint I'd want to tell about the ability to add any brush you want by putting images in brushes folder, which is extremely simple and useful in my opinion! Also that applies to Tux penguin which can be replaced by other pictures named as poses.
Bill: Adding brushes is documented in our "Extending Tux Paint" documentation. Changing the UI isn't, but it's definitely also easy!
Style and Inspiration
- Are there certain topics or fandoms that you like to focus on in your art?
- Mostly I draw "object show" related art, because it's my main fandom. Of course I don't draw only them, but I prefer to keep my social medias focused on this theme.
- What artists do you look up to?
- I don't look up to specific artists, but I'm really inspired by semi-realistic "object show" art — my most favourite part of them is lighting rendering and backgrounds, which makes the whole art piece look like a painting from a museum.
Wrap-up
- If you could interview me, or someone else who works on the Tux Paint project, what would you ask us?
- Is there any possibility of Tux Paint getting into the iOS App Store? I have seen many people on my channel trying to download it on their iPhones, but failing, and I'm feeling bad for all of them, even though I dont have the same problem.
Bill, writing in September 2024: There have been two unofficial versions of Tux Paint in the App Store, produced and maintained by third parties that are not directly involved in the project. Currently, neither are available any more. I'd love to have an official port, but at the moment none of the volunteers who are active on the team has the expertise, experience, equipment, or time to create one. Hopefully some day!
Did you know? Penguins live almost exclusively in the southern hemisphere.
