About Yana

What's your name?
Hi! My name is Katlyn, but I often go by the online username roboticjester. This name was inspired by the android character Data from Star Trek , combined with my love for medieval jesters.
How old are you?
I’m a 20 year old animation student about to enter my third year of university.
Where can people find you online?
Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/roboticjester

Discovering and Using Tux Paint

How do you usually interact with Tux Paint?
I use an Artist 22 Pen Display Tablet by XPPen, which enables me to utilize a large workspace when using Tux Paint. This allows me to add lots of little details to my work!
What are your "go-to" tools in Tux Paint?
I love playing around with the various Magic tools, with the rainbow being one of my favourites. I love the sparkle sound effect that plays whenever I use it!
Is there something you wish Tux Paint could do that it can't?
I would love to be able to create animations using Tux Paint with a timeline feature of some kind!
What other kinds of art tools do you use?
For animating, I’ve recently been using Macromedia Flash 8! While the program is almost twenty years old, it has everything you need to create great animations, while also being simple to understand.
What tips or tricks would you like to share with other aspiring artists?
Have fun! Create without expectations, and just see where the process takes you!

Style and Inspiration

What would you call your art style?
I try and capture a playful and nostalgic feeling in my artworks, with my style being a sort of combination between ‘90s edutainment games, greeting cards, and internet cartoons.
Are there certain topics or fandoms that you like to focus on in your art?
When it comes to existing media, I love to create art for anything that has cute little animals, such as Animal Crossing, Hoops & Yoyo, and Littlest Pet Shop.
What artists do you look up to?
Lisa Frank is a huge inspiration for me, with her whimsical and unapologetically kitschy designs. I also really admire the video games, artworks, and music of Osamu Sato.
What other things inspire you to make art?
I regularly go to the cinema, and find that watching a good film always puts me in a creative mood. Some of my first attempts at using Tux Paint involved me trying to recreate movie posters in the program!

Wrap-up

If you could interview me, or someone else who works on the Tux Paint project, what would you ask us?
First of all, I’d like to say thank you so much for the interview, and that Tux Paint has completely changed my approach to art in the best way possible! For my question, are there any upcoming brushes or tools that us Tux Paint users should look forward to?

Bill, writing in May 2025: I'm glad to hear it! Not too much new in the next version. The new "emitter" tools, as I call them under the hood, will leave trails of hearts, stars, and sparkles on a drawing. They're honestly more about having fun while drawing, than the actual static results they have on the picture. ;-)

Did you know? Tux Paint runs right on your computer, and doesn't require Internet access.
